Las Vegas—Lauren Nelson aka Miss Oklahoma , was crowned Miss America last night. The annual pageant owned by Donald Trump has been a source of much controversy lately as one contestant was recently in rehab and another was de-crowned after posing naked when she was in her teens. Lauren Nelson is an aspiring Broadway actress. As a side note, I actually knew a Miss Illinois once. She went to North Central. She was also an aspiring Broadway actress.

New York—Domo Origato (sp) Mr. Roboto...New York is to have its first robotic parking garage. The Chinatown garage fits 67 cars in a space that would normally fit only 24. The garage parks and fetches your car with no human intervention (except to pay). All is done through elevator and conveyor. The garage will cost $400 per month or $25 per day. This is not the first of its kind in the world. Europe and the Middle East have quite a few. It is only the second garage of this type in the US . The other garage in New Jersey has had a few problems, like dropping cars. I think McMaster needs something like that, only it also conveys you directly too your desk on cold mornings in an insulated bubble.

Greece—Nuns on the run...A group of nuns have holed themselves up behind a Monastery after accumulating massive debt when their knitting business failed. The nuns had blown money on six knitting machines as well as trips to fashion shows to observe the latest in wool wear. Seeing red, the nuns fled as creditors began knocking at the door. As one BBC broadcaster delicately put it... “It’s not how do you solve the problem of Maria...its how do you solve the problem of the 52 Marias .”

Poland—From the Pope to your backside... The historic lace making village of Koniakow has switched from making alter and table cloths to g-strings. The town has a 200 year old tradition of fine lace craftsmanship that simply isn’t as profitable as it once was before. So, in order to continue the lace making industry, a number of village inhabitants have turned to sexy lingerie. While controversial in this usually conservative village, the business has taken off and is flourishing as orders come in from around the world. Sex always sells better than a table cloth!

West Virginia —A big bang...A gas station exploded this morning killing at least 4 people and seriously wounding nine others. Attendants had just called the fire department to report a possible leak in a propane tank when the station exploded. The fire truck had just pulled up. At least two firefighters are among the injured. The force of the explosion was felt a mile away at a ski resort.

Radio power

I found this picture yesterday in an book review in the New York Times (www.nytimes.com) I think its cool. Power to the radio!

Earth, the final frontier...

Below is my first news brief. While I am a great advocate of freedom of speech, I do ask that any comments be responsible and made respectfully. Personal attacts are immature and childish...

Sudan—What did you expect when you cause the deaths of thousands of people...Sudan has been passed over again as the chair for the African Union due to its inability and unwillingness to address the violence in Darfur. Hundreds of thousands of people have died and millions have been forced into refugee camps. Rape and murder is frequently used by both rebels and the Sudanese military. Sudan continues is harsh stance against proposed UN Peacekeepers despite strong international pressure to comply. Ghana has been chosen instead to head the Union ’s rotating presidency. It is considered one of the most prosperous nations in the region. Heads of state from other African nations feel embarrassed by Sudan ’s actions and want to portray a more progressive face to the rest of the world.

India—Ministers of death...Swiss drug maker Novartis has filed suit against the Indian government regarding its right to patent a popular cancer/chemotherapy medication. India is one of the biggest producers of generic drugs for the third world and believes that patenting the expensive drug would have disastrous consequences for the millions of poor who could not afford a non generic drug. Novartis argues that it already gives enough of the drug away for free and that it should be allowed to protect its property. Sadly,Norvatis ailed to pay attention to India ’s latest census figures before issuing its statement The drug company gives the drug for free to about 6,000 people in India and 20,000 people worldwide. Last time I checked India has 1 billion people and the world currently stands at about 6.5 billion people. Protests have, of course, ensued.

Hollywood—they just don’t like Beyonce...the drama continues to unfold as “Dreamgirls” execs are stumbling around trying to figure out how the movie did not warrant a nomination for Hollywood’s top prize—Oscar nominee for Best picture. Despite an aggressive campaign, the movie will have to settle for its 8 other nominations. I think it’s because it has Beyonce in it. You can’t take a movie seriously if it stars a former Austin Powers girl no matter how good the supporting cast is!

Gibraltar—Hasn’t anyone ever heard of a bucket...A tanker has ran aground along the coast of Gibraltar and is currently spilling tons of oil and other toxins into the ocean surrounding the coast. The Gibraltar coast is full of wildlife and reefs. Oil has already begun to wash up on beaches. The weather is being blamed for this accident. Last week another ship ran aground off the coast of the UK due to violent weather. Oil and BMW motorbikes washed up on shore. So the cycle goes, global warming causes dangerous weather, dangerous weather causes accidents, accidents cause pollution, and pollution causes global warming. We’re screwed.

Paris—and global warming causes UN panels...the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change is meeting this week to finalize a report on global warming. The report by scientists from around the world is expected to be grim. Earth is currently warmer than it has been in thousands of years. Critics argue that the study is not as comprehensive as it should as it does not take into account ice sheets melting in Greenland and Antarctica . If taken into account, sea levels could rise nearly five feet by 2100. It is predicted that by 2030, 2,000 of Indonesia ’s 18,000 islands could be completely submerged.

News of the day finds a home...

As my news of the day readership continues to expand well outside the realm of email possibility, I have decided to create a repository of my "News you can use." Hopefully, providing that I can remember, I will post my daily news updates here for all to read and enjoy (or not to enjoy). Don't forget the book blog too if anyone is looking for some good (or bad) books to read!
