The front page of the New York Times--Captain America is dead. The Marvel comic superhero has been killed off by the comic book's creators. There has been a civil war going on in Marvel comic world. Captain America, choosing to take his fight to the courts, was shot dead on the steps of a court house. Super powers save lives, civil courts take them.
Another hurdle and hoop--House dems plan to bring a bill to the floor to overturn Bush archive directive next week. In another attempt to block information that is rightfully the publics, president Bush issued a executive order that severly restricted access to presidential papers. The 2001 order has created a backlog of orders with some researchers waiting over 5 years for information that should have taken a few months. Presidential correspondance and papers often paint a more realistic and truthful (and at times embarrassing) view of presidents and their policies. If President Bush is worried that his papers will embarrass him in public, he needs only to open his mouth at a press conference. He does a fine job on his own.
And will they listen--King Abdullah of Jordan addressed Congress today calling for a greater push towards solving the Palestinian/Israeli conflict. Recalling the 2002 Saudi Arabia plan that called for, among other things, recognition of Israel in return for a viable Palestinian state, King Abdullah said that making this peace happen was far more important than Iraq in securing lasting peace in the region and the world. Is that Dick Cheney sleeping in the background or did he finally have a fatal heart attack? Good points falling sadly on deaf ears.
How many news you can use will it take to reach the sun--How many emails have you sent today? How many podcasts, mp3s etc... have you downloaded? According to a new study by tech research firm IDC, we have managed to produce enough digital info to reach the sun--12 book stacks that each reach from the earth to the sun, or 3 million times all of the information ever written down in every book ever published. Incredibly daunting but so believable, just ask the 162 emails I just deleted.
Evening NYT headlines: Pardon Libby? The ongoing political scandal continues. I'm sure there is some innocent man on deathrow who is in much more need of that pardon than a liar. But our Pres would probably much rather bring out old sparky than watch a friend go to jail. AP: Pentagon sends more troops to Baghdad. At least my bro gets to come home soon! Two more weeks! AP: Georgia truck driver claims half of 350 mil mega millions and I still get to keep my dollar for next Wednesday breakfast burrito.

Happy Birthday/Anniversary Ghana—A shout out to former British Colony Ghana . The African nation celebrates 50 years of Independence today. Large celebrations are planned throughout the country. Ghana is often held up as one of Africa ’s success stories. Like all nations, it’s got some room for improvement.
Would he guest edit news you can use?—Humanitarian, AIDS activist, and U2 front man Bono will serve as guest editor of Vanity Fair for the magazine’s Africa issue. I didn’t know Vanity Fair had an Africa issue, but it will in July. As the magazine’s target audience is usually upper class wealthy people, Bono hopes his issue will make Africa attractive for charitable contributions from the lazy and wealthy—a noble and very daunting task. I wish him luck. I wonder if sister magazine Vogue will run something too. With all their models their topic could be world hunger.
If you are a politician, binoculars are a no no—President Bush was a victim. Israeli PM Aerial Sharon was a victim. And now, Israeli defense minister Amir Peretz is a victim. What are these three men victims of? Not some deadly disease (I won’t comment), but of looking through binoculars with the lens cap on. Ah yes, one of the ultimate political faux pas, and there is always a photographer, conveniently with his lens cap off, waiting to snap a picture at the politicians expense. Mr. Peretz is currently in trouble for his failed Lebanon war, he probably meant to bomb Syria but his compass wouldn’t stop spinning. (story idea courtesy of Emily.)
Don’t give the media a reason--Louis “Scooter” Libby has been found guilty of obstruction of justice, perjury before a grand jury, and lying to the FBI for his role in the release of a CIA operatives name to the media. Libby is Vice President Dick Cheney’s former Chief of Staff. He resigned during the scandal. Libby now faces possible jail time for these offenses.
Iraq refugee update—As you all know, I have been keeping you informed on the appalling plight of Iraqi refugees. Here is an update. The UK has so far taken in 7 Iraqi refugees while the US has taken in 466. Jordan has 7000. Syria has 850,000. Iraq itself has 750,000 displaced people within its borders. The US , to make matters just a bit more difficult, has decided that earlier passports given after the Saddam regime fell are no longer valid. People stuck in Syria , Jordan , Iran etc... with these passports must now travel an almost impossible road back to Baghdad , which has bombings daily, to get the appropriate passports. The current Iraqi refugee crisis is the largest in the region since 1948 Palestinian and Israeli mass movement. As one humanitarian pointed out, the more desperate the person, the more likely they will be shooting at you for food and security instead of farming and working (Worldview, www.wbez.com, 3/6/07, this is tonight’s homework assignment kiddies)

March 5 post
Just another bigot in the Republican party—Ann Coulter, the controversial “journalist” (remember journalist is also title of those who write for National Enquirer)/columnist, has landed herself in hot water again. Was it because she called Muslim’s “ragheads?” No, that was so 2001. Was it because she told 9/11 widows to get over themselves? No, that was so 2005. No, extra, extra read all about it, John Edwards is a “f....ot,” well at least according to Ann Coulter. Coulter made the remark during a speech at the American Conservative Union’s Political Action Conference. She has also accused the Edward’s campaign as being a front for Arab terrorists. Conservatives have quickly moved to denounce her remarks. Why is it always republicans that have such intolerant bigots in their party? To be fair, we Democrats have our nutcases, but at least we typically include all regardless of physical, emotional, or mental problems as well as the usual race, sex, religion, sexual orientation etc....
Just another car bombing in Baghdad—20 people died when a car bomb went off in a book market today in Baghdad . Long ago, the market was a place where intellectuals gathered, but now it is a smoldering heap of burned out stalls and the charred remains of paper. The fire caused by the bomb took longer to put out due to all the paper from print shops and book stalls. Don’t hurt books and those that read them! (That would make a good bumper sticker)
Just another denial in a long line of denials— Japan ’s PM Shinzo Abe has again insisted that the Japanese government will not apologize for its use of sexual slaves during WWII. The US House is currently considering a non-binding resolution that would ask for Japan to take clearer responsibility for its enslavement of up to 200,000 women, mostly Chinese and Korean. Japan did somewhat apologize in 1993, but has refused to take full responsibility. Japan ’s current conservative PM Abe has even gone so far as to say that these women were not coerced. He later retracted those statements. In my opinion, which I so freely give in my news you can use, the Japanese government’s denial of its use of sexual slaves (coerced by it or traders etc..) during WWII is the same as someone denying the holocaust happened—both viewpoints deeply disturbing and disgusting.
Just another FEMA screw up—Residents of a FEMA trailer park in Hammond, Louisiana were forced to evacuate the trailer park after mounting problems with raw sewage and lack of electricity. The co-owner of the site blames FEMA for not paying the bills on time, but FEMA blames the co-owner. While the two battle it out, Families living in the 58 units were moved to other sites around the area. Two years on after hurricane Katrina and we “cattle” are still being herded around a grassless prairie by a really ignorant cowboy.

Another one joins the circus—Senator John McCain announced his plans to run for president on David Letterman late. Already considered a candidate, the 70 year old Senator titles his campaign “Commonsense Conservatism.” Is that the same as “compassionate conservatism” promised by the Bush administration, because yeah that was a joke. This is McCain’s second shot at the Republican nomination. He faces steep opposition from Rudi Giuliani.
Not your normal tater—A 74 year old Italian woman got the shock of her life after buying a sack of potatoes at a local market. While washing the spuds, the woman noticed that one seemed particularly heavy. After washing the dirt off the weighty spud, she noticed that it was not a spud but a hand grenade. The grenade is believed to be from WWII and was most likely picked up from a potato farm in France . Police safely detonated the grenade.
Its not you Dan Brown—Think the Di Vinci Code is the best. Wrong! (I would respect you less if you did by the way) British readers voted Jane Austen’s 18th century classic Pride and Prejudice as their most favorite novel (one of mine too), proving the classics are still the best out there...well almost, Harry Potter fans rejoice as JK Rowlings’ hit wizard series comes in 4th. The Lord of the Rings trilogy placed 2nd. What are your number ones?
And in keeping with my three ring circus of news stories—An Indiana man attempted to cash a 50K check from God. The check was signed by “King savior, King of Kings, Lord of Lords, Servant.” The man was arrested at the Chase bank in which he attempted the fraud and could face jail time. I personally think a check from the devil would have been much more convincing, signed “Lucifer Michael Bezelbub Inferno.”

2/26, Oscar edition...
Oh the Oscars...The glitz and the glamour of Hollywood ’s biggest self congratulatory night, the 79th annual academy awards took place last night in sunny California . Martin Scorsese won best director for “The Departed.” If that wasn’t enough for the director who had yet to win an Oscar, “The Departed” took home the most coveted best picture Oscar as well. Chicago ’s Jennifer Hudson took home the Oscar for best supporting actress for her role in “Dreamgirls” and Helen Mirran won best actress for her performance in “The Queen.” Ellen DeGeneres hilariously hosted the show. Will Farrell and Jack Black provided a very entertaining musical number and Meryl Streep never quite got out of character.
My Best Dressed list: Kate Winslet, (if only teal looked that flawless on me), Nicole Kidman (Tom Cruise you dumped this hot red number for Katie Holmes? Dude you are nuts!), Cate Blanchett (She makes us notoriously funny faced English look amazing), Naomi Watts (Yellow is our friend), and Maggie Gyllenhall (classic). Nods to Reese Witherspoon and Jodie Foster as well for classic, simple elegance.
My worst Dressed list: Sadly two stars who should have known better, Anne Hathaway and Meryl Streep. You guys stared in a major fashion movie in which you made me want to max out my Visa, now I want to take stuff back! Jennifer Lopez, best dressed my ass! She looked like she got in a fight with a chandelier. Jennifer Hudson, big shoulders, big jacket not a winning combo. Cameron Diaz, dress inspired by paper airplanes, origami lovers would be proud, I am not.
Oh the Razzies...While many of Hollywood’s A listers watched their paycheck’s soar, many (mostly on the B, C, D etc... list) also watched their paychecks sour as the 27th Razzie Awards took place along side the Oscars. “Basic Instinct 2” picked up “top” honors winning worst picture and Sharon Stone (her ninth nomination) took home worst actress for her role in the movie. Wayan’s brother’s comedy, or not, “Little Man” picked up three awards and Shyamalan’s “Lady in the Water” picked up two.
Conservative’s nightmare...Don’t worry Al, Bush can’t steel this one and the Supreme Court holds no sway with the Academy. Al Gore’s global warming documentary won an Oscar for best documentary and best song. The VP has been a champion of the global warming issue post 2000 election blues and might actually do more good for this country than our current president ever could. Not every day does a lesbian win best song for a documentary by a democrat about a “bleeding heart liberal issue” Bush can’t ignore anymore during a ceremony that reaches millions more than the State of the Union ever could. God I love Hollywood !
And this is your Oscar news you can use. I’m sure other things happened today, but does it really matter...no, not when Dior and Oscar De La Renta are concerned.

2/22/07 news you can use...
We may not have found much then... But US troops have found evidence of chemical weapons now. No these weapons are not remnants of Saddam’s stock pile (At least on this point, the Bush admin was correct. Saddam had them and used them), but have been found in insurgent and militia stock piles. Earlier this week a bomb was detonated that spread deadly chlorine gas. 2 people were killed, 28 injured. Two other chlorine attacks have been reported. The US is using targeted raids to attempt to stop this kind of warfare before major attacks begin.
You should all be glad I don’t live in Egypt ...An Egyptian blogger has been sentenced to four years in jail for insulting Islam. This is Egypt ’s first blogger to face trial, but certainly not its first journalist. Not that I insult Islam, but I do a lot of insulting in general. I give props to the US for its glorious Constitution.
300 mil plus for us, 150 mil minus for them... Russia is facing a population crisis. The largest country on earth (in land, not people) is losing its population at an alarming rate. Like most industrialized nations, its birthrate has fallen as people are better able to plan pregnancy. However, unlike most industrialized nations, Russia also faces a decline in life expectancy that rivals many third world nations. The average life expectancy is 60 for Russian men, but around 75 for American men. Immigration is a possible solution, but the government remains very xenophobic.
No special treatment for this royal...Britain’s Prince Harry will be deployed to Iraq . The prince attended Sandhurst Military Academy in Britain and has been in the military for the past few years. He is a Second Lieutenant and will assume a troop commander’s role after arrival in Iraq . Critics worry that his presence will increase the likelihood of attacks on his unit by insurgents. A British royal would be quite a prize to insurgents. Prince Henry is third in line for the British throne.
This is your short news you can use for today. Got plastic specs to sort out! Enjoy...

February 21 post...
Jumping ship, saving face, or is it all part of the plan...British PM Tony Blair announced that Britain will reduce its military force currently located in southern Iraq . The troop reduction will begin this year and continue throughout 2008. Denmark and Lithuania will also withdraw their troops from Southern Iraq over the next few months. The troop withdraw comes on the eve of a US troop increase in Baghdad and the north. US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice says the withdraw fits within the overall US plan to pass on more authority to the Iraqis. We shall see...
What’s a word among thousands...Children’s book author, Susan Patron lands in hot water after using the word “scrotum” in children’s lit book The Higher Power of Lucky. Numerous schools and libraries across the country have banned the book due to the word and the paragraph describing the main characters reaction to hearing it. The book is aimed at 9 to 12 year olds and would have gone unnoticed if Patron hadn’t received the prestigious Newbery award (like an Oscar for children’s lit) for this book. Instead of banning an entire book due to one word, maybe parents should actually try being responsible for once and take an interest in what their children are reading. What a novel idea!
And this is why we will not win...PM Al-Maliki has fired a top Sunni government leader after Sunni government officials continued to call for an investigation into rape claims by a Sunni woman. As reported yesterday, the woman claims that she was raped by three Iraqi security officials after being taken into custody for allegedly helping insurgents. The woman was taken to a US medical center. The US refuses to comment on the details of the case saying that it was up to the Iraqi government, but did allow the woman to leave with her medical records. Why is it when a woman is raped (albeit allegedly) the US government backs off all of a sudden and says it’s up the Iraqi government? For shame...
When is too much...Television networks, the music industry, and movie studios just don’t know when to quit. ABC, in a grab for more advertising revenue, has decided to create a spin off of Grey’s Anatomy staring Dr. Addison Sheppard. Now, she is my favorite person on Grey’s Anatomy (behind McDreamy of course) but I don’t think I can emotionally tolerate two hours of Grey’s. The new drama will debut in May. No title and no other details have been released.
Oh please, like that’s going to stop them...the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) has sent thousands of complaints to colleges and Universities all over the US demanding that they put a stop to illegal music file sharing. The complaints list the names of individual students who have been caught on various websites. Punishment for downloading includes everything from email warnings to suspension for a semester, to lawsuits for the biggest offenders (those who offer up thousands of songs). The motion picture industry is reeling again after about a million computer nerds unlocked the latest anti piracy codes on the latest DVDs... It’s only a matter of time before the next Bill Gates figures out how to download information off the internet without leaving an IP address.

If you have $1million to waste...Esther’s Hair salon, in which Britney Spears decided to become Sinead O’Connor, is auctioning off her hair for a cheap million online. Britney’s motive for the new do, or lack of do, has yet to be determined. Some of the proceeds from the sell will apparently go to various charitable organizations. Meanwhile the now balding Spears has been spotted around town wearing various wigs. Hmmmm... I wonder what the million or so cancer survivors who unwillingly shed their locks due to painful chemotherapy think about the spoiled former pop star’s new do. If this is they way you plan on coming back Britney, try singing... oh wait, you never could do that to begin with. (As you can see, I’ve always been on team Justin and team Christina.)
Let’s not let Iraq be the next Pakistan...A new sectarian split has erupted in Baghdad , and this time it centers within the government itself. A Sunni woman announced on Al Jezzera that she had been raped by three members of the Iraqi Security Forces. The woman, whose real name is not yet known, was arrested for helping insurgents and then taken to a police station dominated by Shiites. PM Maliki called for an investigation, but within hours called the investigation off and said that the allegations were not true. Sunni government officials countered saying that medical reports proved that the woman had been raped. The US has yet to offer an opinion on the scandal. And the fighting continues...
How 2007 is suddenly looking like 2003...The US has recently stated that it will attack Iran if one or both of the following occur: A) Iran continues on with its unregulated nuclear weapons program, and/or B) An attack on US troops leads that can be blamed (with “evidence” of course) on Iran. The Iranian government, as expected, dismissed the latest war mongering as nothing but western propaganda. However, the latest posturing by the Bush administration has people on both sides of the pond worried. As I get to say whatever I want seeing as this is my publication, I will offer this up to ponder...
Iranian people:
*Had a more moderate president up to elections in 2001. The country was still relatively undemocratic but it was going places and had made strides in press
Freedom and women’s rights.
Americans:
*Had a more moderate president up to elections in 2000. The country was going places, not too bad of an economy, press freedom was given, and the ladies had
It pretty good.
Iranian people:
*Elected conservative populist who promised reform for the poor and assistance to Iran ’s struggling economy, usually in step with hard line religious leaders that actually head Iran .
Americans:
*Elected or appointed conservative republican president who promised compassionate conservatism and tax breaks to “help” the US economy, usually in step with hard line religious leaders that would like to think they head the US .
Iranian people:
*Silent majority has increased its grumblings about current president and have started to vocally dissent against his current policies. Economy is worse, poor not getting anything, and now face war with US. Parliament attempted to pass resolution to shut president up.
Americans:
*Silent majority became very vocal, kicked president’s party out of Congress. President at all time low approval ratings. Economy not to shabby, poor not getting a dime, and now face war with Iran , as well as already at war with Iraq and Afghanistan . Congress attempted to pass resolution to shame and shut up current president.
So you see...we are all the same... and on that note, this is your news you can use...
